Transcultural Nursing

This module enables students to examine the skills and knowledge needed by the nurse in caring for people from a range of cultures and communities. It is intended to be delivered by blended learning techniques and offered to nurses on the work based learning route. Whilst the notion of Transcultural Nursing may have originated in nursing in the USA over thirty years ago, it still offers challenges in terms of clarifying concepts and definitions. What is cultural sensitivity? What is cultural competence? How do these concepts relate to living and nursing in a multi-cultural society? How can this variety of individual needs be met in diverse health care systems? This module will explore all these ideas and encourage nurses to share cultural and personal beliefs about nursing and examine how these relate to patients and nursing care. Its relevance to nurses in a modern world dominated by individual and group mobility will be readily apparent.
